My grandfather used to sing me this song:
I went to the animal fair,
The birds and the beasts were there,
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair.
The monkey he got drunk,
He sat on the elephant's trunk.
The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees
and that was the end of the monk.
(the monk, the monk)

Was combing his auburn hair.

The song sounds more like an animal party, rather than an animal fair! I am wondering about the monk though—his presence at the party and his absence in the sketch!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the monk was squished under the elephant's knees?
ReplyDeletewe had a different version as kids- The monk a-monk a-monk, he sat on the elephant's trunk. The elephant sneezed and fell to his knees, and what became of the monk-a-monk? We were definitely singing about a monkey, but we didn't know he was drunk.
ReplyDeleteWhat's an animal fair without a little booze? (It doesn't take a lot to make a monkey drunk, anyway... Two shots and an Amstel light and he'll take any dare you throw his way...)
